JLR has reduced prices of the Range Rover, Defender and Discovery in India by up to Rs. 30.4 lakh courtesy of the new GST 2.0 tax slab

Jaguar Land Rover has become the latest luxury automaker to welcome the GST 2.0 reforms by announcing staggering price cuts across its portfolio. Customers can now enjoy benefits ranging from Rs. 4.5 lakh to as high as Rs. 30.4 lakh depending on the vehicle and trim.

The rationalisation of GST slabs has turned premium SUVs like the Range Rover, Defender and Discovery into significantly more attractive buys just in time for the festive season. The biggest gainer in JLR’s stable is the Range Rover which now comes with price benefits starting at Rs. 4.6 lakh and going all the way up to a jaw-dropping Rs. 30.4 lakh.

The Defender, another popular offering in India, offers reductions between Rs. 7 lakh and Rs. 18.6 lakh. Meanwhile, the versatile Discovery sees price drops of Rs. 4.5 lakh to Rs. 9.9 lakh. Jaguar Land Rover’s proactive step to pass on the full benefit to customers may help it capture good volumes in India’s luxury SUV space.

Defender

Discovery

Rivals such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have also announced substantial price cuts but the Rs. 30.4 lakh reduction on the Range Rover is among the steepest in the entire premium car industry. The reductions have been made possible by GST 2.0 which has fundamentally restructured India’s auto taxation system.

With demand for luxury SUVs already booming, these reforms could lead to record-breaking sales in the coming quarters. With the festive season on, luxury buyers are expected to flock to dealerships – encouraged by GST-driven price reductions as well as possible additional dealer-level discounts and finance schemes.

For context, petrol cars in the sub-four-metre category with engines below 1,200 cc now attract 18 per cent GST instead of 29 per cent while diesel cars with engines under 1,500 cc have dropped from 31 per cent to 18 per cent. The tax slab has been changed from 45 per cent to 40 per cent in the midsize space while large SUVs and luxury cars have seen their rates from 48 to 50 per cent reduced to a flat 40 per cent.

It could translate into a resurgence of sales particularly for high margin models like the Range Rover and Defender. We will have to wait and see how it really pans out!
