Tata Avinya range is expected to spawn multiple new EVs in the future and it could be based on the EMA platform

Tata Motors introduced the electric iterations of the Curvv and the Harrier EV in recent times and both of which graced the show floor at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. Towards the end of FY2026, the homegrown manufacturer plans to introduce the Sierra EV and it will more likely be followed by the premium Avinya range in 2027-28.

Unlike Tata’s existing crop of zero-emission models, the upcoming Avinya series will stand apart by being underpinned by the EMA architecture derived from JLR. The dedicated skateboard platform will allow Tata to equip the Avinya with a higher level of sophistication and technology compared to its current range.

To be positioned as the brand’s most premium electric offering, the Avinya lineup will sit at the very top of Tata’s portfolio – marking a clear step up in its long term strategy as 30 new vehicles are planned to arrive by FY30 including seven new nameplates. Tata could carve out a unique identity for the Avinya by positioning it as a standalone entity within its portfolio – opening the door to multiple body styles down the line including a possible cross-coupe derivative.

The EMA platform, at the core of this project, was expected to be localised in India, a move that would driving down production costs while paying royalty fees. JLR’s ambitious plan to manufacture EVs based on the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform in India for export markets has reportedly been put on hold. The move comes after local component suppliers were reportedly unable to match the required price levels and quality benchmarks set by the company.

As a result, talks with these vendors were suspended creating uncertainty around the timeline for the rollout of EMA-based vehicles. It also impacts Tata Motors’ future premium EV strategy as the upcoming Avinya series – which was slated to utilise the same platform — may face delays in its production roadmap but there isn’t much clarity on this matter officially yet.

The Avinya concept, first showcased on the Generation 3 platform a few years back, stood out for its forward-thinking design both inside and out. The cabin broke away from conventional layouts by doing away with large touchscreens, instead opting for a hidden display that stretched across the dashboard to give a sense of openness.

Adding to its futuristic appeal, the headrests came fitted with an integrated sound bar while voice-command features played a pivotal role in operating in-car functions – a marked departure from the usual touchscreen-heavy setups seen in modern vehicles. The Avinya X showcased earlier this year certainly evolved in multiple ways.
