Clogged DPF on my 3500 km run Creta diesel: Replaced in warranty

BHPian touchu recently shared this with other enthusiasts:Don’t Make My Mistake: The Brutal Truth About Owning a BS6 Diesel..Hi BHPians! We’re a family of four and We’ve been happy owners of a 2010 Chevy Spark for about 13 years and only around 50,000kms driven but due to some serious radiator issue and as it was high time that we needed an upgrade and wanted something bigger, so after some hunting around, we bought the new 2024 Hyundai Creta in March 2024. We went all-out and got the top-end SX(O) diesel manual, and let me tell you, going from a 1.0L petrol to a 1.5L diesel felt like a massive leap. The initial feeling was just pure joy. The diesel choice was a no-brainer at the time. My dad had a 100km round trip to work every day, and I’m a big fan of road trips and long drives whenever I’m home. We were also chasing that great mileage that diesels are known for. The car seemed to tick every single box. In fact, within the first 20 days of owning it, we did an epic 1,000+ km road trip from Visakhapatnam to Bhadrachalam. The Creta handled everything beautifully, from smooth highways to rough, winding ghat roads. But here’s where the story takes a turn. This is the part that really highlights the pros and cons of modern BS6 diesels. About three months after we bought the car in June 2024, at this point it did around 3500kms, my dad’s job situation changed, and his daily commute went from 100km to a tiny 4km round trip. For those of you who don’t know, a BS6 diesel engine has a little something called a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Think of it like a little vacuum cleaner that catches all the dirty soot from the exhaust. To clean itself out, it needs to get really hot, which usually happens on a long, high-speed drive. Well, our car was now only doing short city runs, stopping at two traffic signals and barely getting a chance to warm up. You can probably guess what happened. Fast forward to November, and my dad gives me a call: the DPF warning light is on. Having read a bit about this, I knew it wasn’t good. I came home right away and took the car out. It felt terrible-the engine wouldn’t rev past 1500 rpm, and the fuel consumption was through the roof. I took it straight to the nearest Hyundai service center, and the mechanics confirmed it: the DPF was completely clogged up. They tried to clean it, even pointing out the individual injectors the little guys that spray the fuel into the engine Then they realized the damage was too severe as too much soot is clogged up in the filter and the only way to repair it is to get it completely replaced. So they went ahead and replaced it with a new one, shown below. The best thing about Hyundai Serviceis they did not ask any questions and repaired my car and delivered it within 3 days. It’s a huge reminder of why Hyundai’s service in India is so beloved; they really give you that peace of mind.A huge sigh of relief. But it was also a hard lesson learned. A diesel engine is a magnificent thing, but only if you use it for what it’s meant for. City driving is a big no-no. Now, my dad still uses the car for his short trips, but I make it a point to take it on a nice, long drive every weekend. It’s a small ritual to make sure that DPF stays healthy and we never run into that problem again. After the replacement we haven’t had any issues related to DPF until last week where the DPF warning popped up on the screen again, but I took care of it by going on a long drive. The easiest way to solve this issue is to drive the car above 60Km/h for about 25 minutes minimum and all the soot clogged up in the filter would get incinerated and converted into harmless ash and gas. Ultimately, this whole experience boils down to a single, crucial point:, in this day and age with all the emission norms and its restrictions, think twice before buying a diesel car.
