Mercedes-Benz has become the first luxury automaker in the Indian market to slash the prices of its cars after the rollout of GST 2.0

Post the introduction of the restructured tax slabs under GST 2.0 by the Union Government, Mercedes-Benz has become the first luxury car brand in India to slash the prices of its models and directly pass the benefits to the customers. The company, in an official press note, stated that it has reduced the prices of its cars by up to Rs 11 lakh in the Indian market. Earlier, Mercedes-Benz cars in India were placed in the 48 percent tax category but with the GST 2.0, it has been brought down to 40 percent tax slab which will come into effect from September 22.

“In line with our commitment to our customers, we are pleased to share that Mercedes-Benz India will be passing on the entire benefit of the GST reduction directly to the end customers,” said Mercedes-Benz in its press statement. Mercedes-Benz EVs in India will continue to attract 5 percent GST and hence there will be no change in their prices.

Model-wise, Mercedes-Benz S 450 4Matic gets the maximum price cut of Rs 11 lakh as it will cost Rs 1.88 Crore from Sep 22 as compared to the earlier price of Rs 1.99 Crore. Next, the brand’s flagship SUV model, the GLS 450d AMG Line is now cheaper by Rs 10 lakh with revised price of Rs 1.34 Crore against the Rs 1.44 Crore, which was before GST 2.0 was announced.

In fact, the GLE 450 4Matic price has been reduced by Rs 8 lakh as it will now cost Rs 1.07 Crore from the earlier price of Rs 1.15 Crore. Mercedes-Benz E-Class (LWB 450 4Matic), the German brand’s best-selling model in India, will now cost Rs 91 lakh after the implementation of GST 2.0 from Sep 22. For the unversed, it was retailed at a sticker price of Rs 97 lakh and hence will be cheaper by Rs 6 lakh.

The C-Class 300 AMG Line gets a new price of Rs 64.30 lakh from the pre-GST 2.0 Rs 68 lakh, thereby resulting in a price cut of Rs 3.70 lakh. The C-Class of SUVs, the GLC 300 4Matic, was sold at Rs 79.25 lakh before GST 2.0 in India. However, from Sep 22 under GST 2.0, it can be purchased at Rs 73.95 lakh, down by Rs 5.30 lakh.

Coming to the entry-level A-Class sedan (A200d) price, it has been slashed by Rs 2.60 lakh in the Indian market. It used to cost Rs 48.55 lakh earlier but from Sep 22, it will be sold at Rs 45.95 lakh. Last but not the least, the GLA 220d 4Matic AMG Line gets more affordable with a price cut of 3.80 lakh due to GST 2.0 with a new price of Rs 52.70 lakh as compared to previous price of Rs 56.50 lakh.

All the prices mentioned in this article are ex-showroom, pan India. With Mercedes-Benz directly passing the benefits of lower GST to the buyers, we expect more luxury brands such as BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, Audi and Volvo to join this bandwagon soon.
