Hyundai Evaluating Genesis Luxury SUVs & Sedans For India

First Genesis car could be launched in India as early as next year, marking Hyundai’s entry into India’s luxury car segment

Having successfully climbed from an entry-level player to an entry-premium brand and cemented consumer confidence with its recent stock market listing in India, Hyundai is now preparing for its next big move. The company is looking at a wide range of Genesis SUVs and sedans to foray into the luxury segment.

It’s been more than a decade since Hyundai started studying the Genesis executive sedan for India. Originally sold as a Hyundai, the car became the foundation stone of the company’s first luxury brand in 2015 – Genesis, along with which it was renamed to G80. The South Korean automaker continued eyeing India’s luxury segment with the newly formed brand, and now, it seems the outcome of the years of planning is finally set to come to fruition.

On 5th August, Hyundai’s Indian subsidiary confirmed for the first time that it could launch Genesis cars in India. “We are also strategically evaluating the introduction of Genesis,” Hyundai Motor India’s whole-time director and COO Tarun Garg said in his note to investors in the company’s FY2025 report. Further underscoring the shift from speculation to concrete action, the company has appointed Anuraag Singh as the Vertical Head for Genesis India to lead the project.

In less than a decade, the Genesis line-up has expanded to eight models and covers nearly every key global segment. The range includes a G70 D-segment sedan and a Euro-focused G70 Shooting Brake derived from the same, the aforementioned G80 E-segment sedan, a G90 F-segment sedan, a GV60 C-segment SUV, a GV70 D-segment SUV, and a GV80 E-segment SUV and a GV80 Coupe derived from the same.

The Genesis portfolio includes three fully electric models as well. The GV60 was conceived as an EV, while the G80 and GV70 are available in pure electric variants with the “Electrified” prefix. Extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) models are also in the pipeline, with the first one scheduled to premiere in 2026.

Hyundai’s Indian subsidiary is mainly interested in Genesis SUV models, which makes sense considering the strong consumer preference for the high-riding body style and the widespread poor road conditions in the country. Given that EVs enjoy a preferential GST rate of just 5%—up to 35% lower than other categories, the GV60 or Electrified GV80 could certainly be one model under consideration.

Initially, Genesis cars should arrive via the CBU route. Hyundai could switch to CKD assembly as and when demand rises to a feasible level. The first model may arrive in showrooms at the end of 2025.
